Renault Car Immobiliser Bypass

How to bypass a Renault car immobiliser using its bypass de-activation code

For use with cars that have an infra-red key

Haven't found what you're looking for? Try searching here...

What is it?

Some Renault cars have an inbuilt system that enables you to override the immobiliser should the infra-red key fob cease to work. This is useful to emergency and recovery services should they need to move a dead vehicle.

The Immobiliser Bypass Code is a four digit numeric code that is unique to each car. This code can be obtained by running a small downloadable Windows 32 bit software application and entering the specifics of your car.

This technique can only be used to override the immobiliser on a vehicle for which you have the key or key number so don't go thinking you can use this method to steal cars!

So, if you have found that the infra-red key fob for your Renault car is no longer de-activating the immobiliser, this bypass technique can be used as a temporary work around to start the car until you can get it fixed properly by a dealer.

Why are you giving away this information?

It is true that some people on internet forums and auction sites are charging for this information.

Your car is important to you and I believe that if your car has been rendered undriveable through no fault of your own and a quick easy fix is available you should not be held to ransom by someone wishing to make some profit.

I hope that you find this information useful and perhaps even use it to get yourself out of a sticky situation.

How does it work?

The application that is available for download here will enable you to find out what the immobiliser bypass code is for your car. Once you have the code you can use it for as long as you need, there is no limit as to how many times you can enter it.

Don't wait until you are stuck in the middle of nowhere wishing you had your code. Get it now and keep it for when you might need it.

Will it work for me?

To find out if this system will work for your car, try the following test:

  • If your vehicle has a central locking button on the dash/centre console:
    1. Switch on the ignition.
    2. Press and hold the central locking button.
    3. If the immobiliser light stops blinking and changes to a slow flash, this system will work for you.
  • If your vehicle does NOT have a central locking button on the dash/centre console:
    1. Switch on the ignition.
    2. Press and hold the accelerator pedal (you may also need to press the button on the end of the windscreen wiper stalk).
    3. If the immobiliser light stops blinking and changes to a slow flash, this system will work for you.

If you cannot get the immobiliser light to change to a slow flash, this system will not work for your car.

How do I do it?

Entering the bypass code:

  • If your vehicle has a central locking button on the dash/centre console:
    1. Download the ZIP file that contains the RenaultImmCode.exe application from here.
    2. Extract the two files from the ZIP file and read the ReadMe.txt file which contains some simple instructions.
    3. Run the RenaultImmCode.exe file and enter your car type number.
    4. Enter the code on the sticker inside your key or the key numbers from the front of your service book.
    5. Make a note of the four digit bypass code which should be displayed.
    6. Press Enter twice to exit the application.
    7. Get into your car, switch on the ignition and hold the central locking button down and the red immobiliser light will start to flash slowly.
    8. Count out the number of flashes and release the central locking button when it matches the number of the 1st digit of your bypass code.
    9. Now hold down the central locking button and count the flashes up to the 2nd digit of the bypass code and release.
    10. Repeat the above step for the 3rd and 4th digits.

    11. Re-synching the key fob (may not always work):

    12. With all bypass digits entered, turn off the ignition.
    13. Hold down the central locking button. The immobiliser lights should remain constantly on.
    14. Point your key fob at the IR sensor near the internal rear view mirror and press on/off quickly. Hopefully the key should now be re-synched.
If it is not, wait for the immobiliser light to start flashing and try steps 12-13 again making sure the ignition is off. It may take a few goes or may not work at all in which case you'll have to see your dealer to have it reprogrammed.
  • If your vehicle does NOT have a central locking button on the dash/centre console:
    1. If you don't have central locking you just need to substitute the pressing of the central locking button with the accelerator instead in the above instructions (you may also need to press the button on the end of the windscreen wiper stalk).

How do I find my car type number?

UPDATE: Many people have commented that the car type number is not required. They have either entered their car model i.e. 'Megane' or just entered something random.
It would seem then that all you need is the key code so if you are having trouble finding your car type then you can try it anyway.

Your car type number will be printed on the Oval Plate which has been used for the identification of Renault vehicles since 1909. The location and design was changed several times during that period.

In vehicles produced before 1995 You will find the oval plate in engine compartment. It is made of aluminium and can be located separate or together with obligatory Vehicle Manufacturer Plate.

In vehicles produced after 1995 the Oval Plate is made from plastic in form of sticker located on right side middle door pillar. It can be seen by opening front passenger door.

Where

If you have trouble finding your car type number, some people have been given it by their dealer.

Update: One person in the comments below has reported they entered the model of their car 'megane' and it worked for them.

From 1997

The car type number is indicated by the number 9 in the diagram below.

From 1997 Plate

From 1995

The car type number is indicated by the number 8 in the diagram below.

A lot of people are asking if this will work for their car. Please read this before posting.

The program is for Windows 32 bit computers. Some people have reported that the program will not run on their PC. Trying it on another PC has usually worked for them.

Thanks for the donation Tanya, much appreciated!

Thank-you very much, this worked for my 2005 Modus. Took a few goes with the code generator, you might need to miss off the first digit of your key number. Sucessfully reset the key in the car, not sure if I counted the digits incorrectly or if it was just a fluke but the car started after following the steps twice.

sounds a great site, If you have a digital camera you can check if LED is working:- turn on camera aim key fob at camera & press fob button & look at LCD on rear of camera. if it don't blink then solder LED. I have spent many minutes resoldering infra red LED's on both my fobs but now both still blink but fail. Have never been able to resync even though i know the 4 digit code?. Must be chip failure or yi can't sync properly. So we're driving with dead keyfobs and have to press the imobiliser every time we drive anywhere. To make matters worse our code has 2 9's & an 8 so lots of time waiting for red lights to blink. good luck, Steve

This does not seem to work on a Clio year 2007. Is there any way to by pass the immobiliser on this?

29 December 2009 - Jason
Great piece of software it has saved me 3 times now, i have to say thanks to the admin who made the software

I would like to try this bypass , but I opened up the key fob, and there is NO Key Code inside , there IS a sticker, but it is blank ! I did try the syncronising sequence, and that works and the doors open and close(after soldering the connections inside the key) But the car will still not start. I could be a dodgy battery though, as it has been icy and snowing yesterday & today. I might try a new battery.

Thank you for your comment Gosh. It seems the intructions were not clear enough in the Will it work section. I have updated the instructions to explicitly say that if you cannot get the light to slow then it will not work for your car.

20 December 2009 - Gosh
Dear Admin, I've read all posts and it looks like every 3rd person saying that RED LIGHT IS NOT SLOWING DOWN when instructions applied...and those posts get ignored... I have the very same problem with my Renault Scenic 16 RT - 1999, application didn't work with numbers you indicated me to find but instead I used last 5 digits of VIN and it generated 4 digit code, as many others, I also couldn't slow down red light on a dash. Tried everything that's been already tried by others - to no luck. Could you please help us with that? How to get that light to slow down so we can apply code?? - many thanks in advance. Gosh.

Worked well thanks very much just one question other web pages i looked at that would of charged 20 pound for the same info said this can only be done a few times before the immobiliser shuts the car down completely (these however offered the immobiliser repair and key reprogram at more cost than my car is worth) is this true or do they just want my money? thanks again would of been lost with out your help.

I have completed this process to bypass the immobiliser on my R reg Megane and obtained the code. After entering, via the central locking button, the immobiliser light still flashes on the dashboard along with an orange light with the zig zag line on it. Any ideas?

I try on my Renault Megane yr 98/99. This model key code can be found inside the key casing. Vehicle type: can put in any word, i have tested many times with different word, the result provide the same code. I run this program in Win7 32bit OS. Thanks for the great tips.

Further previous comment... Took out immoboliser sensor circuit board (simply dis-connects from attached cable) Dried it out on the radiator and refitted. Went through entering the 4-digit central-locking method again (all good), light remained on. Turned off the ignition as per step 11 (here light went out) and held down central locking button as per step 12 but light didn't come on or remain constant. However, did step 13 and wolla, heard a few central locking clicks and it was re-sync'd. Thanks again you have saved me a fortune.

15 November 2009 - Dan
genius! entered 4-digit code through central-locking method and got car started - don't know if steps 12-13 (re-sync fob) worked though - I opened the casing where the sensor sits and it looks damp inside, I guess it's the same problem most people have reported on here. Once again superb site.

Just came across this site today 11/09,downloaded the zip file, typed in "megane",got the key code from inside keyfob, not only did it work, but also syncronised the fob/immobiliser too, many thanks!!

Nice work. For more car specific data on procedure and what is and is not possible, check out:RENAULT KEY AND IMMOBILISER MEMENTO on google search (Then Download pdf file). My own experience hints: (megane 1.6e RT 1996) IR Key failure, car immob code recovery via exe file download from this site; Keycode used was my 5 character(key) string. First character (key) the letter S (specific for my car - see pdf) and numbers and letters that followed were etched into inside of the plastic cover of key. Disabled immob. tried to resync but failed. Camera check-no blue light shown so no infra from key. KEY RED LED WORKED BUT GAVE LONGER RED BLINK THAN WHEN CORRECTLY OPERATING, MAYBE THE INDICATION FOR THE INFRA LED FAILURE. re-solder of INFRA LED, short red flash of signal red led returned and camera check showed functional blue flash of the INFRA LED working again.(PROBLEM WAS A SIMPLE SOLDER/CONNECTION FAILURE) Following closely the method given for my car in the pdf mentioned above, disabled immob. and immediately (Within 10 secs) synced key. Functionality fully returned. And today is Friday 13th!

Thanks for the info this works really well and is easy to use. I have found the common problem with Renault immobilisers is the infrared sender inside the key can come un-soldered, this is an easy fix for anyone with a soldering iron and a screwdriver. hope this helps and stops the main dealer robbing you blind for things you don't need.

Thanks. Finally got our 97 megane going! your number-getter worked a treat. A slight difference that may be useful to others...our car has no central locking so I tried the accelerator and wiper stalk method which wouldn't work so I searched for another "button" and would you believe it on the dash the central locking button actually works in the disabling method you describe despite there being no central locking in the car! Well who d'a thowt! Thanks again! Al
